Karen brought in a few items, one of which was this great colorful stripe dress. However the dress had seen better days since it had split in the back by the seat, and as most modern women’s garments are now, it had no extra fabric on the inside of the dress to help us salvage the piece.

What Karen and I had both agreed upon was the fabric was a lot of fun, and she was totally cool with it being worked into a top, but it was too small on it’s own. She brought in one of her favorite tops from local designer Nana to show me a top she loved, and the shape she enjoyed to wear. After getting a feel for her style, I suggested we do a tunic out of a drapey navy fabric we have, and work the stripe in across the shoulders.

She was on board, and I started with the basic tunic. We met again to tweak the shaping across the waist and shoulders, and to finalize the hem and placement of the stripes. To top it off, we decided to cut one side with a boatneck and the other with a scoop neck, so it was reversible depending on the occasion!
