Pile

(or Nap) refers to the fuzzy part of corduroy or velvet. It’s usually directional, so when you brush the fibers up or down, it can change the color of the fabric, or look shinier on one side. Special machine feet are sometimes necessary when sewing either of these fabrics, since the sewing machine can leave marks imprinted in the pile if you’re not careful.
