Tailoring Terminology: Boatneck

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Boatneck

A boatneck shirt is a wide, straight-line neck, where the front is usually the same as the back. Used in both menswear and women’s, it’s also called a “bateau neck” or “Sabrina neck” (And yes- that’s a reference to the Audrey Hepburn movie).

French in origin, it comes from traditional French sailors’ uniforms. The wide neck was for easy removal in the case of a sailor falling overboard. So, thank you to clumsy sailors for innovating this flattering detail!
Boatneck, Ginger Root style – a touch more exaggerated then normal boatnecks.
