It’s hard to produce jewelry that has a handmade feel but doesn’t look sloppy or too crafty. Our newest artist’s work strikes that perfect balance! Nicole Durant and her jewelry line, TyniseNicole, is artisan work at its best. With lots of chunky brass and stacked shapes, TyniseNicole is artistic, bold and definitely makes a statement.

How did you come to Ginger Root Design? I’ve been following Ginger Root since they first opened! I remember I was just walking down U St one day and decided to pop in. And I’m so glad I did! I was in love with the concept from the beginning and knew I wanted to be apart of it!
What inspired you to begin making jewelry? I have always been a crafty person and really enjoy making things with my hands. I also love to accessorize, but I like to wear things that no one else has. So one day I watched a few youtube videos, did a few google searches and learned how to bead and create really simple wire earrings. I started wearing my jewelry out in public and began to get a lot of compliments on them. Then I started to think, “hey, if people like what I’m making, why not start making some off of it?!” So, I began selling my pieces in early 2010.
How has your work evolved over time? My work has evolved tremendously! When I think back on some the jewelry I used to make when I first started, I can’t believe people actually liked it and bought. 🙂 But it has been a learning experience and I’ve grown a lot as an artist and am not afraid to be myself with my designs. Metal smithing is really my passion now…I’m a novice, but I’m excited to learn more and create more amazing and unique pieces.
What inspires your designs and creations? I’m inspired by so much! Mostly just the world around me. I’m really influenced by African, Native American, and many Asian cultures. I enjoy taking old concepts from these cultures and making them new again with my own little twist.
What is your favorite thing to do in DC? I love going to the museums and going anywhere that has a love band.
