This week’s About a Dress was sent to us by Erin’s mother (Metal Musings!), with the original intent of being sliced up for city bloomers.  On second glance though, it was begging to be used as more than just fabric.

After removing 12″ from the sides, and cutting 23″ off the hem, we added some vintage cream fabric to the new hem and sliced open the back. With such a conservative front, the back needed to show off a little skin! Using selvage fabric, we made tie closures, ensuring that this smock dress will fit a variety of sizes, and can even be worn backwards as a vest.

BUT WAIT! Not done yet 🙂 Taking the hem remenants, we sitched the side slits closed and made a rolled waistband. to create the “paper bag” effect, we made 22 oversized button holes, and constructed a cream belt to cinch in the waist. The end result is another multi-sized garment, which can be worn high waisted or lower on the hips, depending on your mood.

Both of these pieces fufill our longing for fall’s layering pieces, while still being mindful of DC’s sweltering heat. We might want fall, but, let’s be honest, it’s not going to get cooler til October. At least now we can shake up the summer blahs, without stockpiling sweaters for another 2 months!
